During this prestigious competition, 3 Sababay products, namely Moscato d’Bali, White Velvet and Reserve Red, were awarded with Silver Medals. The AWC Vienna is the largest renowned wine competition in the world, and this year’s event was attended by 1,866 wine producers from 41 countries that send their 12,826 best wine products. AWC applies among the strictest standards, where an international judge from highest rank performs absolute blind tasting in individual cabins. In 2015 at the same event, Moscato d’Bali and Reserve Red also won the Silver Medal.

“This achievement further confirms the fact that Indonesia can produce high quality wine. These awards have placed Indonesia on the world map of best wine producers,” said Gupta Sitorus, Marketing Director Sababay Winery.

Previously, Sababay Moscato d'Bali has won silver award from the Singapore Wine & Spirits Awards 2014, a leading wine competition in Asia where wine producers from all over the world gather and have their products tested and tasted using blind tasting system. Sababay has also received three medals at the 2015 CWSA (Cina Wine & Spirits Awards). Sababay obtains supply of grapes for its wine production from local farmers in Buleleng, Bali. Based on a corporate farming concept, Sababay initiated partnership with local farmers for exclusive grape sales at a reasonable price. Gupta added that to date, Sababay has partnered around 180 grape farmer families who collectively work on a total plantation area of 80 hectares. “Every year we purchase around 400 tons of grapes from our partner farmers,” explained Gupta.

Sababay is committed to continue improving the welfare of partner farmers. Before the partnership program was introduced, these farmers can only obtain around Rp1 million a year at the price of grape of Rp500 per kilogram. Through this partnership, farmers can now sell their harvests for Rp5,000 per kg, which means they earn much better income.

Of the 700 commercially-available grape varieties, Sababay produces wine using grapes from Alphonse-Lavallee and Muscat varieties. In four-season climate, these varieties can only be harvested once a year, but grown on Buleleng soil, farmers can get up to three harvests in a year. However to maintain the quality of grapes produced, Sababay only picks their grapes twice a year.

As a high-tech wine manufacturing company, Sababay operates a state-of-the-art wine production facility that stands on over 2 hectares of land, equipped with machineries that are imported directly from France. Sababay’s production facility applies international standards, with stainless steel wine tanks and fermenters and Italian-made automatic bottling system. This facility is also equipped with cold storage system for end products, quality control laboratory, sustainable solid and liquid waste management system, and other supporting facilities.
